One of the most important pieces of equipment for your Ham Radio Shack or CB Radio Shack is the SWR Watt Meter

There are many excellent brands of SWR Meters to choose from, such as Daiwa, Mfj and More.

Through the my many years as a CB Radio Operator and Ham Radio Operator, I have used quite a few SWR Watt or Power Meters. In my CB Radio days I started out with a Lafayette SWR Meter for mobile use. The next was the Radio Shack 3 meter type for SWR, Power and Modulation. Then as I advanced to a better CB Base Radio, I purchased the 3 meter style by Astatic. This was the SWR, Power and Modulation. Today I seem to see this type made by Dosy. All of these SWR Watt Meters still work to this day.

Now that I am into the Ham Radio Hobby, I have added some swr meters to my Ham Shack. I started out with the large scale MFJ Cross Needle SWR Power Meter. This meter will cover HF, Uhf and Vhf. The highest wattage is about 300 watts. Now I wanted a new large scale SWR Power Meter. So I added one of the Daiwa SWR Meters. This is the very large cross needle display. It can handle up to about 2000 watts and is mainly for the HF Bands. Click Here For A Mfj Digital SWR Power Meter.

Now there are many other SWR Meters that provide excellent measurements for your Ham Radios or CB Radios. So my best advise is pick out what type of swr meter you prefer. It can be the cross needle type or the single needle type. Always make sure to check the sellers ratings and reviews. Always protect your valuable Ham Radios and CB Radios.

One other important piece of Ham Radio Gear is the SWR Antenna Analyzer.

If you are going to keep your Ham Radio Equipment running in tip top shape, buy a good Antenna Analyzer. Yes there are many different antenna analyzers to choose from. These antenna analyzers will be especially important in the designing and building of your ham antennas. I myself have one of the Mfj Antenna Analyzers and it has been an awesome help a number of times. Just remember to pay attention to what Ham Radio Bands it will cover. The more expensive models will cover the HF, Vhf and Uhf Bands.

This is a good example of a nice Antenna Analyzer for Ham Radio

MFJ-259D HF/VHF (100-160KHz, 280-520KHz, 530KHz-230MHz) SWR Antenna Analyzer

Same great performance as the popular MFJ-259C, but with two additional frequency ranges (100-160KHz and 280-520KHz)

You can read Complex Impedance as series resistance and reactance (R+jX) or as magnitude (Z) and phase (degrees). Determine velocity factor, coax loss in dB, coax length and distance to a short/open. Read SWR, return loss and reflection coefficient at any frequency simultaneously. You can read inductance in uH and capacitance in pF at RF frequencies. Large easy-to-read two line LCD screen and side-by-side analog meters clearly display your information. Built-in frequency counter, Ni-MH/Ni-CD charger circuit, battery saver, low battery warning and smooth reduction drive tuning. Super easy to use! Just set the bandswitch and tune the dial -- just like your transceiver. SWR and Complex Impedance are displayed instantly! Here’s what you can do, Find your antenna’s true resonant frequency. Trim dipoles and verticals.

Adjust your Yagi, quad, loop and other antennas, change antenna spacing and height and watch SWR, resistance and reactance change instantly. You’ll know exactly what to do by simply watching the display. Perfectly tune critical HF mobile antennas in seconds for super DX -- without subjecting your transceiver to high SWR.

Measure your antenna’s 2:1 SWR bandwidth on one band, or analyze multiband performance. Check SWR outside the ham bands without violating FCC rules.

Take guesswork out of building and adjusting matching networks and baluns. Accurately measure distance to short or open in failed coax. Measure length of a roll of coax, coax loss, velocity factor and impedance. Measure inductance, capacitance. Troubleshoot and measure resonant frequency, Q of traps, stubs, transmission lines, chokes, tuned circuits, baluns. Adjust your antenna tuner for a perfect 1:1 match without creating QRM.

This is one of the most important items that you will ever add to your Ham Shack.
